Thunder Goof

I love the new Thundercats show, and it does a fantastic amount of things correct, especially in terms of atmosphere, design, animation, and respect for its origins. But there's some real storytelling clunkiness in some episodes. Panthro's flashback was all about how power corrupts, and yet the thing that makes him accept Lion-O as leader is how powerful he is with the sword?

Maybe if it was clear that wielding the Sword of Omens meant something, ala Excalibur. All we know, really, is that no one that's pure evil can hold it, which, I suppose is pretty impressive in racist, classist, elitist, monarchy-ruled Thundera. But I kind of wish this was less a 'Legendary Hero' story, and focused more on Lion-O as the progressive, understanding ruler that Thundera needs to modernize and evolve. Less about the Sword, as awesome as it is, and more about him learning how to become that leader. But then, we wouldn't get lots of action, and kids would be bored.

Ah well, it's early, and, as I said before, the show does a lot of things right, and I look forward to seeing where things go.
