Description

The first three Metroids each ended on really big unexpected twists - Metroid 1′s shocking reveal on Samus’s identity and how it affected many is well documented, and I personally experienced the greatness of Super Metroid’s very cinematic ending, but I never really learned how people reacted to Metroid 2′s ending. Did people wonder why you couldn’t kill the thing flying around? What did people think it showed of Samus – that she had orders and this was part of the mission, or that she had a change of heart at the last moment? I like to think it’s the turning point in her character arc, from a warrior to a savior, from a weapon to a hero. I headcanon this shiz.

And even if my headcanon is potentially in jeopardy, I’m really looking forward to Metroid: Samus Returns. Already preordered the special edition. Sakamoto seems to be doing what he wanted for Other M, except it works much better in 2D space. Curious if they’re gonna change up the story or add to it, ala Zero Mission. Ponder ponder.

Metroid 2 is one of the most important games in the series' lore, and at the same time one of the least known games. People seem to forget that Samus basically commits genocide on the Metroids in the second game, systematically killing each and every one of them, including the Metroid Queen, as the game progresses. The game even has a specific metroid counter so you know how many Metroids are left for you to kill. The hatchling at the end is the last one, which you don't kill.
